The RTA supports the porgraming and events that help this very special population of tennis players and has raised and donated over 25,000 to the ATANC.
The Abilities Tennis Association has created several programs following the existing adaptive tennis guidelines and rules of the court set by the International Tennis Federation for special needs tennis. These are the same guidelines currently accepted by Special Olympics. Our hope is that others will follow this precedence so that the athletes learn the same skills and follow the same rules of adaptive tennis wherever they choose to play and complete.
The mission of the Abilities Tennis (formerly Adaptive Tennis Association of North Carolina) is to offer tennis opportunities at all levels for individuals with intellectual disabilities across the state of North Carolina.
Increase the availability of tennis clinics for persons with intellectual disabilities in every community.
Increase the availability of tennis tournaments for persons with intellectual disabilities in every community.
Increase the availability of tennis instruction in the schools for persons with intellectual disabilities in every community.
Provide resources to local Community Tennis Associations interested in incorporating tennis for intellectually disabled athletes into their programs.
Encourage intellectually disabled athletes to be physically active and competitive.
