  • Both players are to bring NEW balls for the match. The winner takes home the new unopened can of balls.
  • If court fees are involved, players should share the cost.
  • If a player is forfeiting a match in the middle of a set, the score is recorded as if the set was completed (e.g. Player stops when the score is 3-1, then the score should be recorded as 6-1).
  • If a player cancels for any reason (including sickness and emergencies) within 24 hours, their opponent may record a 6-0, 6-0 win if they choose.

The players' position as of the challenge date will be used to calculate points earned for each match and the appropriate allocation of points.

Ranking Points

  • The challenger receives 2 extra points.
  • A lower ranked player receives 15 extra points for beating a higher ranked plus points using the following formula: (Difference in games in sets won) x (Difference in ranks)/2.
  • A tied in rank player receives 15 extra points plus the difference in games won by.
  • A higher ranked player receives 10 extra points for beating a lower ranked player plus points for the difference in games in sets won.
  • The loser of any match receives points equaling the number of games won in all sets, but never more than 10 points.
  • The winner of a match that is played against a player more than 10 positions away will receive the points as if the players are only 10 places apart.
  • The point system has been designed to encourage activity by awarding points to both the winner and the loser. The number of points received by either player for a match is rounded up to the nearest whole number.
  • As an example, suppose Ted, ranked 9, challenges and defeats Bill, ranked 5, with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 during week 7 of the ladder. Ted would receive 2 points for challenging, 15 points for the upset, and (5 x 4) / 2 = 10 bonus points for games won, for a total of 27 points. Bill would receive 1 point for each game won up to the maximum of 10 points for his loss.

Highlights of the Ladder

  • The season will last between 9 and 12 weeks each season. Players may join the ladder at any time. There will be a playoff in each division among the top 8 players in the last ranking period. There is a season ending tournament.
  • There will be 4 divisions for men (3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5) and 5 divisions for women (2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5). There will be a Coed Open division that men and women can play in together. There will also be 2 divisions for juniors; Bronze and Silver. Gold level players will play in the adult divisions. Doubles is offered in the summer and winter seasons.
  • Participants can earn points for challenges to move higher on the ladder. -Points are awarded to players based on set scores and player ranking positions. (Even if you lose, you still gain points and move up).

  • Players set up their match times and locations at their convenience and can play as often as they want.
  • Matches are 2 out of 3 sets (12 point tiebreak, 1st to 7, at 6 all). In lieu of a 3rd set, a match tiebreaker can be played if both players agree (1st to 10 points by 2). For match tiebreaker, enter 7-6 as the score online.
  • Activity is the key to this program. Players who continue to play challenges will gain points to maintain or improve their rankings. By not playing matches, your ranking will fall. In the spirit of the ladder, please make an attempt to accept all challenges made to you and return calls/e-mails regarding play.
  • New computer rankings will be generated each Monday based on matches played during the previous week. Players can get their updated rankings online by Monday afternoon.
  • Trophies will be awarded to finalists in each division at the Ladder Tournament.
  • Players cannot record a match online until their name appears on the ladder.
  • Adult registration fee is $24.00 ($36 for non-city residents). Check made payable to The City of Raleigh. (SPECIAL DEAL: Players on the singles ladder may join the doubles ladder or the coed open singles ladder and get a $10.00 discount, $14.00 ($26.00 for non-city).
  • Players may choose which ladder is appropriate for them to play. Players may move from one ladder to another if they feel that they have placed themselves incorrectly, but must start at the bottom of that ladder if they make the switch. Accumulated points do not carry over when moving from one ladder to another.
  • -The winner of the match is responsible for posting the match results by Sunday at 12:00 am (midnight). The loser now has the option to verify that the score is input correctly because after midnight, the score can not be changed.
